Young Pointers claim tournament title

Van Buren coach John Petree said he's not sure which team will show up from night to night lately, but the Pointers were sure good last weekend.

Van Buren had seven wrestlers place in the top three in their respective weight class to claim the Pulaski Academy Invitational title.

"We didn't wrestle well Tuesday against Fayetteville and Springdale Har-Ber but came back on Thursday and got back on track against Stilwell and North Little Rock," Petree said. "With our youth, we're kind of Jekyll and Hyde. But Saturday, they got out there and got after it a little bit."

The Pointers rolled up 205.5 points to easily outdistance second-place Berryville with 160.5 in the event, which included 21 teams.

The Pointers have just two seniors in their lineup. Mason Hayes and Christian Carney are not only performing well on the mat but also providing great leadership, Petree said.

Hayes (30-3), the only Pointer to medal at last year's state tournament, won the 126-pound weight class, while teammates Trevor Edelen (113) and Jaeden Stanley (132) also took first.

Fayetteville

Matthew Muller, an Arkansas-Little Rock signee, was impressive in winning the 182-pound weight class at the Branson (Mo.) Invitational over the weekend.

The senior missed time recently with a concussion but performed well against good competition last weekend, Fayetteville coach Nika West said.

Muller pinned his way through to the finals, then defeated Neosho's Drayke Perry 10-6 in the finals.

"We preached all weekend on him going out and battling and staying in good position," West said. "He did that. In the finals, we were tied 4-4 and took the lead early in the second period and never trailed from there."

Fayetteville's girls team came home from Branson with their first hardware, finishing second out of eight teams.

April Stanley won the 131-pound weight class, while Abigail Fimbres (116), Soleia Meers (136), Emily Gunter (152) and Mayte Rodriguez each finished second.

Gunter drew praise from West for her mettle, despite trailing 9-1 in a match came the freshman came back to get the win by fall.

Greenwood

The Bulldogs went 5-0 over the weekend to claim the Searcy Duals tournament title, downing Little Rock Catholic in the finals.

Greenwood coach John Kincade said his team's depth is a strength, especially in duals.

"We've got some good kids at the lower weights like Ty Moose at 126 and Colton Tuck at 138," Kincade said. "We've got a new kid, Greg Dean, from Alaska who came in at semester. He and Gus McKusker give me two guys at 145 and allow us to bump kids around in the lineup."

Sam Johnson (152) also came up with a big win over Searcy's Brad Brown, a former state champion, while Dylan Wilson also went undefeated on the weekend for the Bulldogs, who improved to 14-1 in duals.

Bentonville

Sophomore Tristan Stafford finished second in the 106-pound weight class at the Branson (Mo.) Invitational to help the Tigers take fifth in a tough 15-team event last weekend.

Zane Sims, the defending 6A-7A state champion at 160, finished second, while Obi Smith got third at 132. Four other Bentonville wrestlers each finished fifth.

Bentonville West

Daryl Easterling finished second at 132 at last weekend's Port City Classic in Catoosa, Okla.

Easterling (31-8) lost a tough match 3-1 to Wesley Scott of Pawnee, Okla., in the finals. Charles Easterling was also fourth at 113 to help the Wolverines finish ninth out of 23 teams.
