President, lawmakers
leading U.S. wrong way
I'm in my 80s and have always voted. I have never seen such an unhealthy environment that we -- our Congress -- have allowed one person (our so-called president) to place our country in. He has alienated most of our allies while we certainly need their friendship.
He is hurting our own citizens with his shutdown over a wall that most know can and will be scaled or tunneled under.
I wonder how our Congress, including our own representatives from Arkansas, can stand behind such an egotistical and narrow-minded person who has uttered so many untruths.
And why are there so many evangelicals standing up for this person?
The guest column written by Ron West ("A price too high") on Friday, Jan. 11, needs to be a must-read for everyone.

Husband's care at VA
deserving of gratitude
Recently, my husband Joe passed away at the Veterans Affairs nursing home in Fayetteville.
I am so grateful for the kind and proficient care that he received there for almost four years.
In spite of his dementia and physical problems, he understood that the care center (sixth floor) was "my home."
Thank you, dear caretakers, nursing home personnel and related churches, schools and VA organizations.

Wall not the solution
for what ails America
The idea that a wall will keep out refugees is not possible because America is surrounded by water. Smugglers will obtain boats and rafts to breech our shores. Do you sink the boats and drown women and children or do you take them ashore?
Europe faced the same terrible problem. A three-year drought in Africa forced many to leave or starve.
Two sticks of TNT will blow a hole in the wall.
Where do we find the billions to fund the wall? The Defense Department says "not from our budget."
Billions go to a cruel ruler in Egypt instead of funding new industry, farming help and native crafts to augment income in these poor countries.
Will you build a wall between the USA and Canada?
We must show the world we can connect with the values and ideas that once led the world. Now we have no allies left. No landing fields. No sites for artillery. No troops to fight overwhelming odds.
The wall is a symbol of isolating America.
