First couple show decor at annual Children's Tea

The Grand Hall of the Governor's Mansion -- decorated to look like a snowy Arkansas woodland -- was the setting Dec. 18 for the First Lady's Children's Tea.

Children and their parents enjoyed an array of sweets and treats including gingerbread cookies, cranberry and blackberry scones, raspberry cloud cookies, pecan tarts, tiny macaroons and tea sandwiches.

First lady Susan and Gov. Asa Hutchinson were in attendance. The governor spoke about the decorating theme at the mansion -- An Arkansas Natural Christmas -- inspired by a visit to the governor's childhood home in Northwest Arkansas when the couple were dating. The first lady noted that 45 volunteers helped turn the hall into the "Ozark winter wonderland."

The first lady also had the honor of introducing the afternoon's special guest -- Santa. After leading the guests in singing "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and answering the children's questions about Mrs. Claus, elves and reindeer, he took time to meet with them and hear their Christmas wishes.

Proceeds from the tea benefit the Arkansas Governor's Mansion Association.
