Highway honors state official

Dick Trammel of Rogers, whose 10-year term on the Arkansas Highway Commission ended Wednesday, had a highway named after him as part of his send-off.

A 30-mile section of Arkansas 265 from Arkansas 16 in Fayetteville to Arkansas 94 in Rogers will be known as the Dick Trammel Highway.

Signed by the commission's four other members -- Tom Schueck of Little Rock, Robert Moore Jr. of Arkansas City, Alec Farmer of Jonesboro and Philip Taldo of Springdale -- the honor was accorded to Trammel, who was appointed to the commission by Gov. Mike Beebe to a term that began in January 2009, for his work to improve the corridor.

"Under Commissioner Trammel's leadership, improvements to the Highway 265 Corridor has [made it a] viable north south connection that provides road users with a transportation alternative that increases mobility in the region," the order said.

The highway is the fourth named after a commission member.

In 2007, a section of what is now Interstate 49 from Interstate 30 to the Texas border in Texarkana was named after Prissy Hickerson.

In 2014, a section of U.S. 412 between the Oklahoma border and Arkansas 59 in Siloam Springs was named after Jonathan Barnett.

The next year, the commission named a section of U.S. 62 between its junctions with U.S. 62B east and west of the Baxter County community of Cotter after Bobby Hopper.

The tunnel on Interstate 49 near Winslow in Washington County also is named after Hopper. That designation was approved in 1998.
