PREP BASKETBALL Siloam Springs sweeps Beebe

SILOAM SPRINGS -- Not much went Siloam Springs' way in the second half Friday night.

The Lady Panthers got out to a 12-point lead and watched it dwindle down to a single point on four occasions.

Beebe crushed Siloam Springs on the glass, and the Lady Panthers went 0 for 5 from the free-throw line over the final two quarters.

Despite all that, the Lady Panthers found a way to pull out a 35-33 win to open 5A-West Conference play at Panther Activity Center.

"I am really proud of the kids for gutting one out because it wasn't real pretty," said Siloam Springs coach Tim Rippy. "It's one that we needed and we found a way."

The Lady Panthers were clinging to a 33-32 lead when Chloe Price stepped in front of a Beebe pass and scored on the other end with 2:09 left for a 35-32 lead.

What followed over the next two minutes was a clinic in failed execution.

Beebe had three turnovers and went 1 for 4 from the free throw line.

Siloam Springs had a pair of turnovers and missed the front end of a pair of 1-and-1s, including a lane violation on shooter Morgan Winesburg with 4.9 seconds left.

Beebe got the ball back and Madelyn Atkins drove the lane but was unable to get a game-tying attempt off and Siloam Springs survived for the win.

"We had a lot of opportunities," said Beebe coach Greg Richey. "We're just having trouble cashing in on our opportunities right now. That's kind of been our M.O. this year. This is our fifth game where it's come down to the last shot and we haven't won one of them."

Harried led Siloam Springs with 12 points, while Price had eight. Atkins led Beebe with 11.

Boys

Siloam Springs 41, Beebe 39

Siloam Springs snapped a three-game losing streak and overcame their hurdle as of late -- the fourth quarter -- in a 41-39 5A-West Conference win over Beebe on Friday at Panther Activity Center.

"It was the best we've looked in spurts," said Siloam Springs coach Tim Stewart. "What we're really proud of -- you know the boys kind of faltered there in the fourth quarter -- and it's a really tough situation where we know we've struggled in certain areas. For them to battle out of that and find a way to come out on top is really fun to see."

Beebe rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to take a fourth-quarter lead, and the two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the fourth.

The Panthers (6-6, 1-0 5A-West) trailed 39-38 after a baseline jump shot from E.J. Smith gave the Badgers the lead with 1:20 left in the game.

Jordan Stewart had a good look at a 3-pointer from the top of the key for Siloam Springs but the shot missed, however Jacob Wakefield tipped the ball to Landon Ward near the elbow.

Ward went back up with the shot and it bounced in for a 40-39 lead as the clock ticked under a minute.

Beebe ran nearly 40 seconds off the clock before taking a timeout with 10.3 seconds left.

Out of the timeout, Smith missed a 3-pointer and Stewart rebounded and was fouled for Siloam Springs with 0.9 seconds left.

Stewart missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and Beebe rebounded, but the Badgers had no timeouts to stop the clock. Beebe coach Ryan Marshall called timeout anyway, which resulted in a technical foul.

Wakefield hit one of the two technical shots and the Panthers were able to run off the remaining time to hang on for the win.

"Our defense was pretty solid all night," Stewart said. "We were loose with the ball a little bit and took some marginal shots, but I was really proud of the boys coming through in a tight ballgame and making plays."
