FAYETTEVILLE -- The first phase of a construction project at the National Cemetery should wrap by the end of the month with no interruptions in funeral service, its director says.

Work began Feb. 11 to replace the curbs and add parking spaces. About half the curbing has been removed, with a portion of of the pouring work completed, said Skip Solomon, cemetery director.

Workers should be ready to move to the parking aspect of the project by the end of the month, Solomon said. The cemetery has three spaces at the administrative office and will add two, he said. One of the spaces will remain reserved for visitors with disabilities.

Work should not affect services or visitation. Cars can park on Government Avenue or next to the service shelter once work on the parking lot begins.

The project should last four months and is being headed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, according to a department news release.

The front gates will be closed once the parking expansion begins. Solomon said administrators will drive a golf cart for guests to get around. The gates will reopen once work ends each day.

The rest of the cemetery will remain open from dawn to dusk.
