5A-CENTRAL BOYS

LR Parkview rounding into form

Little Rock Parkview Coach Al Flanigan wants his team to get into postseason mode.

Tuesday's game was a good start.

Behind senior forward Allen Flanigan's 27 points and seven rebounds, the Patriots defeated Maumelle 61-54 at Maumelle High School.

Parkview (16-7) remained in third place in the 5A-Central at 8-3 with three games left before the Class 5A state tournament at Lake Hamilton. The Patriots travel to White Hall on Friday, then face 5A-Central leader Little Rock Hall at home Tuesday. They wrap up the regular season with second-place Pine Bluff on Feb. 21.

"We need to win out," Al Flanigan said. "Once you get in, anything can happen."

The Patriots avenged their 65-61 loss to Maumelle on Jan. 18 at Charles Ripley Arena in Little Rock.

"We did what we were supposed to do," Al Flanigan said. "They weren't supposed to beat us at our place. We didn't play ball. We didn't use our head.

"But every time we come together and play defense, we're capable of beating anybody."

Senior forward Airion Simmons finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocked shots for the Patriots, who shot 20 of 46 (43.4 percent) from the floor and 22 of 31 at the free-throw line. Junior forward Jared Presley also had 11 points.

The Patriots led 30-25 at halftime, then held the Hornets to six points in the third quarter for a 39-31 advantage entering the fourth.

Allen Flanigan's two free throws with 4:40 left gave Parkview its largest lead at 47-35. Maumelle cut the lead to six points on three occasions.

Presley's basket and Allen Flanigan's dunk allowed the Patriots to stretch their lead to 56-46 with 1:36 remaining.

Junior forward Taylin Banks' layup with 37.3 seconds to play pulled the Hornets within 58-52, but that was as close as the Hornets would get.

With 20 seconds remaining, Allen Flanigan knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing for a 61-52 lead.

Maumelle (13-11, 6-5), which fell to fifth place in the 5A-Central, was held to 17-of-52 shooting (32.7 percent) and did not have a player with at least 10 points. Banks, junior Tre Flowers and sophomore Dreshaun Doyne each had eight points.

"We've been hot and cold all year," Maumelle Coach Michael Shook said. "The nights we shoot well, we win. The nights we don't, we don't win. Credit to Parkview's defense. They have tremendous players over there. That 2-3 matchup that they run is really good."
