Nathaniel Whittington, a seventh-grade student a Northridge Middle School in Van Buren, will be honored at both Duke University and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for his score on the ACT college entrance taken in October. He will receive the grand recognition award. Nate qualified by receiving a 33 in English, 32 in reading, and a 33 in science.

Millie Pianalto of Springdale is the champion of the 13th annual Arkansas Tech University Juried Student Competitive Exhibition. Pianalto captured first place with her submission of a charcoal drawing entitled “Starry Eyed.”

Don Eichenberger, assistant principal at Spring-dale High School, is the Arkansas Association of Secondary School Principals’ 2020 assistant principal of the year. Eichenberger has worked for the Springdale School District for 29 years. He was Springdale High School’s teacher of the year in 2007.

Kristopher Johnson was part of a team of three Southern Arkansas University Computer Science students who earned first place at the ACM-ICPC held at Fort Smith on Nov. 2.

Johnson is a junior cyber security and privacy major from Siloam Springs.

The International Collegiate Programming Contest is an algorithmic programming contest for college students and is the oldest, largest and most prestigious programming contest in the world.

The SAU team, led by Dr. Hong Cheng, associate professor of mathematics and computer science, won first place over this year’s competition comprised of 20 teams representing the University of Arkansas, University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College, Harding University, Ouachita Baptist University and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

Students earned roles in the Southern Arkansas University Theatre production of Little Women musical Nov. 20-24 at Harton Theatre.

Those from this area included:

Timothy Starr, senior musical theater major from Van Buren. Starr played the role of Professor Bhaer and was a props artist.

Simon Tursky, junior musical theater major from Van Buren. Tursky was the sound designer.

Danielle Boyster, sophomore theater major from Siloam Springs. Boyster was the props designer and an assistant scenic designer.

John Orndorff, sophomore theater major from Gravette. Orndorff was an electrician and follow spot operator.
