Church notes: Advent services and sing-alongs at area churches

Carroll County

Eureka First United Methodist Church in Eureka Springs, 195 Huntsville Road, hosts The Nine Lessons, a nondenominational Advent Peace Service that features scripture readings, choral selections and carols which tell of the birth of Christ. Presented by the Celebration Choir, the performance begins at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Donations at the performance will be accepted to benefit Jeremiah Recovery House of Green Forest.

Washington County

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, 224 N. East Ave., hosts the annual Alternative Gift Market from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday in Parish Hall. The Alternative Gift Market provides a meaningful option to object-based gift shopping while celebrating and supporting nonprofit organizations in our local community and worldwide. Participating organizations include Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, Arts Live Theatre, Canopy NWA, Humane Society of the Ozarks, Prison Story Project, Welcome Health and more.

The Angel Tree has returned to St. Paul's Welcome Center. Each tag on the tree represents a man, woman or child in need of warm scarves, hats, gloves and socks. Take a tag from the tree, and then bring your gifts in a medium-sized gift bag by Dec. 15.

An evening Advent series continues Sundays at 5:30 p.m.:

• Dec. 8 -- St. Nicholas Celebration, 5:30 p.m. Participants will enjoy cookie decorating and tales of the famous 4th century Bishop Nicholas of Myra. Supper and nursery will be provided.

• Dec. 15 -- Advent Lessons and Carols with the choirs of St. Paul's, 5:30 p.m. Nursery will be provided.

• Dec. 22 -- Christmas Pageant, 5:30 p.m. with a full rehearsal at 4 p.m. After the pageant, a cookie reception will be held in the Parish Hall. Nursery will not be provided for this event.

Bella Vista Community Church, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd., hosts the following Christmas concerts in the sanctuary:

• Dec. 12 -- Bentonville High School Chamber Orchestra, 5:30 p.m.

• Dec. 14 -- Bella Vista Community Concert Band, 3 p.m.

Join the congregation at 10 a.m. Dec. 22 for a combined worship service followed by Breakfast in Bethlehem at 11 a.m. in McKay Hall. Please sign up by Dec. 15.

The Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Service will take place at 3 p.m. Dec. 24.

Bella Vista Lutheran Church, 1990 Forest Hills Blvd., hosts Handel's "Messiah" at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 8, presented by the Celebration Choir and Orchestra. A reception will follow the concert, and all are welcome.

The annual Christmas children's concert will be at 9:45 a.m. Dec. 15 in the church sanctuary.

The Shepherd's Food Pantry is collecting items for the Christmas dinner and would like donations of boxed mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, canned sweet potatoes, canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup, canned cranberry sauce, small red or green gelatin (sugar-free or regular), and yellow or while cake mix. A container for your donations is in the church narthex.

First Presbyterian Church in Bentonville, 901 N.E. J St., will offer a "Service of Solace" at 4 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary. This quiet service of reflection, remembrance and comfort will include prayers, songs and candle lighting.

The Bentonville High School Chamber Orchestra will present a Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at the church. All are welcome.

Highland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Bella Vista, 1500 Forest Hills Blvd., celebrates the Second Sunday of Advent Dec. 8. A "Christmas special offering" will be taken during the morning service. The Rev. Skip French will be back and speaking from Philippians 2:1-11, "Rediscover Christmas: Frosty."

At 4 p.m. Dec. 9, there will be a Board Meeting in Fellowship Hall, followed by an elders meeting.

At 10 a.m. Dec. 14, there will be a women's meeting with Sara Denning speaking on "Christmas Story," and Nancy Sherbondy and Jean Raines hosting a brunch.

Unity Church of the Ozarks, 2200 S.E. J St., Bentonville, hosts a second Sunday of Advent presentation titled "God's Grace" by the Rev. Elise Cowan at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The service is followed by "Standing in Peace" at noon to pray to manifest peace on earth.

The annual Christmas Sing-Along begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 13. Bring a snack and join in.

Every Wednesday evening (except Christmas) the new Metaphysical Meetup class takes place at 7 p.m. The December study is "The Pineal Meditation."
