Civil War

The December meeting of the Bella Vista Civil War Roundtable will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Bella Vista Historical Society Museum at 1885 Bella Vista Way, next to the American Legion.

Kerry Jones, park ranger at Pea Ridge National Military Park, will be the guest speaker. One of Jones' previous assignments with the National Park Service was at Vicksburg, Miss. As a seasonal ranger, he gave talks and tours of the USS Cairo, a Union ironclad that was sunk at Vicksburg on Dec. 12, 1862. It was discovered and subsequently raised on Dec. 12, 1964, exactly 102 years later.

The roundtable is open to the public; there is no charge for admission.

Fort Smith Friends

Friends of the Fort Smith Public Library will host a sale of rare and vintage books through Dec. 8. A range of topics are represented including art, religion, history, and much more with publication dates ranging from the 1800s to present.

Sale hours are noon to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 2; noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 3-6; 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 7; and 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 8.

FPL Friends

The Friends of the Fayetteville Public Library will host their Holiday Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 and 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 8 in the library lobby.

Book prices will be 25 cents for pocket paperbacks, 50 cents for children's and trade paperback books and $1 for hardback books. Participants will also have the opportunity to "fill a bag" at a cost of $5 per bag.

Christian Women

The Bella Vista Christian Women's Connection will meet at 9 a.m. Dec. 10 at Bella Vista Community Church, 75 Lancashire Blvd. The public is invited.

The feature will be the Bella Vista Women's Chorus. The guest speaker will be Kristi Wolf Norris, whose presentation is titled "A Life Lived in Vain."

This brunch is held the second Tuesday each month, and an all-American breakfast is served for $10. The program is sponsored by Stonecroft Ministries.

The Ko-Ko-Ci Chapter, Arkansas Archeological Society, will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Washington County Extension Services building, 2536 N. McConnell Ave. in Fayetteville.

Guest speaker will be Jessica Kowalski, local Research Station archaeologist, who will present "The Arcola Mounds and Mississippian Ceremonialism in the Southern Yazoo Basin."

The Nebraska Club of Bella Vista and Northwest Arkansas will hold their annual Christmas dinner party at 6 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Bella Vista Bar and Grill. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., and the cost for dinner is $15.

The Northwest Arkansas Chapter, Military Officers Association of America, will hold their annual Christmas dinner for officers and warrant officers (active duty, national guard, reserve, former and retired) of the U.S. Armed Forces and their spouses at 7 p.m. Dec. 19 at Mermaids Restaurant in Fayetteville. Social hour begins at 6:30 p.m. All commissioned officers and spouses of the armed forces, both active and former, are invited to attend regardless of membership status.

Dinner is $25 per person. The menu is the manager's special buffet. Coat and tie, military uniform, or "after 5 attire" is encouraged.

Entertainment for the dinner is by the awarding winning Har-Ber High School Choir, which will sing a selection of Christmas songs.
