Group bets on children’s charities

The CARE Initiative's eighth Las Faygas Texas Hold'em Tournament and Casino Night on Aug. 16 helped the group raise some $29,000. The benefit featured craps, roulette, Black Jack and Texas Hold'em tables, with winnings in the form of prizes.

The CARE Initiative focuses on children, awareness, responsibility and encouragement, and helps support programs at local children's charities. It was started by Saatchi & Saatchi X employees. The groups being helped include EOA Children's House, Children's Safety Center of Washington County, Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and Children's Advocacy Center of Benton County.

Those betting to boost charities included Emily Fisher, Jessica and Jody Hendrix, Jim Cartwright, Renee and Steve Carr, Kat Calhoun and Shawn Boyce, Jason and Megan Cuddy, Nicole and James Herrington, Sharon Lee, Michele Anthony, Kim Phillip, Jody Sims, Joel Eikenberry, Donovan Angel, Trenton Moss, Craig Pierce and Kevin Clauson.

Kendrick Fincher Hydration Foundation backers joined the nonprofit organization Aug. 17 at the Fayetteville Town Center for the annual A Cool Summer Homecoming benefit.

No homecoming is complete without a homecoming court, which consisted of eight area young professionals. Members of the court spent the last several months trying to raise the most money for the foundation, and thus being crowned king or queen. This year, the crowns went to Sarah Brown of Movista and Wes Shirley of LALA US.

Court members were:

• Sophia Roehl, Nice-Pak Products;

• Adriana Torres, Legacy National Bank;

• Sara Thompson, The Hershey Company;

• Earnie Edge, Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette;

• Ray Mortimeyer, BNSF Logistics; and

• Adam Remillard, Decatur Public School District.

The group's activities include BeeSmart. BeeHydrated! hydration education for school children, presentations to athletes, coaches and parents; providing "cool huts" for outdoor events; and partnerships with other organizations that include the Arkansas Activities Association, Emergency Medical Services for Children and Arkansas Educational Television Network.

Those helping the hydration organization included Catherine and Dean Weber, Peggy and Brian Arend, Michelle and Daniel Barrett, Heather and Jason Foitek, Laura and Russ Tucker, Harry and Sue Cauthen and Rhonda and Carl Wotowis.
