Police identify injured pedestrian

FAYETTEVILLE -- Police say 45-year-old William H. Phelps was crossing Wedington Drive trying to catch a ride when he was hit by a vehicle Wednesday.

Sgt. Anthony Murphy, police spokesman, said Phelps was walking west on the shoulder of Wedington Drive when someone stopped to ask him if he needed a ride.

When Phelps began to cross the street he failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was hit, Murphy said. Phelps was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Murphy said.

The accident near Raincrow Road was reported about 1:40 p.m., according to police records.
