School-supply event planned

As many as 3,000 free backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed to schoolchildren and their families as part of the "Head of the Class Bash Back-to-School Festival" from 1 p.m. to 5 pm. Sunday.

The event, which also will feature health and dental exams, free immunizations, food trucks, bounce houses and basketball drills and skills, is open to the public at the Jack Stephens Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, 2801 S. University Avenue.

Computer-based financial literacy activities, haircuts, workshops on nutrition and story time and book giveaways are also planned for the back-to-school event that is being held for the first time this year at the Jack Stephens Center.

The larger location and combined efforts of community partners will allow more students and families to access more resources and activities under one roof than ever before, planners headed by the Clinton President Center said.

Other organizations helping with the event are Arkansas 529, Saint Mark Baptist Church, 3M, Derek Lewis Foundation, Delta Dental of Arkansas, Entergy Arkansas, Saint Mark Episcopal Church, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Lakeshore Learning, Arkansas Department of Health and Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance.
