Classes canceled after student dies in on-campus shooting

CONCORD, Ark. -- Classes at a rural Arkansas school have been canceled for the rest of the week after a 14-year-old student fatally shot himself with a handgun in the school's bathroom in the middle of the school day.

The shooting Wednesday prompted a lockdown after a faculty member heard the gunshot at Concord High School, about 65 miles northeast of Little Rock. Cleburne County Sheriff Chris Brown says the shooting happened shortly after lunch when most students had returned to class.

Authorities say the death is believed to be a suicide.

Brown says the school does not have metal detectors but it does have armed faculty members.

The shooting happened less than a month after a student shot another student at a school in the south Arkansas town of Prescott.
