Arrest made in Fayetteville bank robbery

FAYETTEVILLE -- A man has been arrested in connection with a bank robbery that happened Friday morning, according to Fayetteville police.

Richard Varnell, 42, was arrested at around 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sgt. Anthony Murphy, public information officer, said Saturday morning.

Police received numerous tips, which led detectives to a bus stop at 955 N. Shiloh Drive where Varnell was arrested without incident, according to a post on the Fayetteville Police Department's Facebook page.

The man was arrested into connection with aggravated robbery, shoplifting, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal trespass, according to the post.

A man with a handgun who took an undisclosed amount of money from the Centennial Bank, 3010 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., around 8:40 a.m. Friday.

Murphy said the robber was described as a white man in his 20s, wearing a black jacket and blue pants with a blue stripe down the side, and a bandana across his face.

Murphy said bank employees told officers the robber left the bank through the back door and headed west on foot before turning north.

Police officers and Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies set up a perimeter and began to search the area.
