SPRINGDALE -- A longtime principal in the School District has been named assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for prekindergarten through fifth grade.

Maribel Childress has been principal at Monitor Elementary School since it opened in 2007. She was principal at Parson Hills Elementary for eight years before that.

She will replace Kathy Morledge, who is retiring at the end of this school year.

"Without question, Maribel Childress is an excellent educational leader who has repeatedly and consistently proven herself within the Springdale School District," said Superintendent Jim Rollins. "She is well-known for her commitment to educational excellence at the district, state and national level."

Childress earned her undergraduate degree and a master's degree in elementary counseling from Louisiana Tech University. She also completed the educational specialist program in educational leadership at the University of Arkansas in 2000, according to a district news release.

She was the state's elementary level principal of the year in 2008 and earned the designation of master principal in 2010. Principals earn master status by completing three years of rigorous professional development plus a year of performance evaluations through a program run by the Arkansas Leadership Academy.
