FAYETTEVILLE -- Residents are invited to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up.

The event will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Marion Orton Recycling Center at 735 W. North St.

Mayor Lioneld Jordan will issue a proclamation and volunteers will head out to pick up litter from different areas of the city's trails and streams, according to a city news release.

Instructions and supplies will be provided, including recycling and trash bags, gloves and litter grabbers. T-shirts and other items will be given away as volunteers arrive back at Marion Orton after the cleanup, according to the release.

The city encourages residents to walk, bicycle or carpool to the event. Weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes should be worn.

To sign up, call 444-3467 or email Kristina Jones, volunteer coordinator, at [email protected].

Earth Day will be held nationally on Monday. It will be the 49th year of the celebration. This year's theme is the protection of plant and wildlife species, according to earthday.org.
