ROGERS -- The city gained land Tuesday after the council agreed to annex property in Cave Springs.

Reaves Family Ltd., the owners of the property, have 5 acres near the Shadow Valley Country Club surrounded by Rogers, said Bill Watkins, their representative.

"It's in the middle of the golf course. We went to the Cave Springs City Council and asked them to transfer over the property," Watkins said. "It just makes sense with where it's located.

"It somehow got left out originally 15 or 16 years ago and has been functioning as if it is in the city of Rogers. This is an amicable process between the cities," Watkins said.

The council also approved placing more than $1 million into the self-funded city health insurance budget to cover cost overruns.

Pharmacy reimbursements totaled $77,971 and excess insurance payment totaled $1,117,377. It's been a high-claim year, Mayor Greg Hines said.

Having a year with a high amount of claims isn't unusual, but this is the first year there has been a need to add money to the budgeted amount, Hines said.

The council also accepted a grant for trail improvement throughout the city.

The Walton Family Foundation gave Rogers a $280,500 grant to plant trees and create shade, said Casey Wilhelm, director of finance.

"There's a lot of areas that are directly in the sun, and we're hoping this will give us full areas of shade," Wilhelm said.

Jim White, parks and recreation director, said he is excited about the grant. The city hopes to have the trees planted by the end of the year.
