Red Cross seeks donors

The American Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage and urgently needs blood and platelet donors to give now to avoid delays in lifesaving medical care for patients. Volunteer blood drive hosts are also critically needed to prevent the shortage from worsening this winter.

Champagne to speak

Derek Champagne, founder and CEO of The Artist Evolution, a thriving marketing firm based in Fayetteville, was invited to present as part of the latest installment of the Jack Shewmaker Lecture Series, hosted by the Enactus team of Northwest Arkansas Community College. The event will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 19 at the the Walmart Auditorium located at the Shewmaker Center for Workforce Technologies.

The event is free and open to NWACC students, faculty and members of the Northwest Arkansas community. The lecture will be preceded by a reception from 6 to 7 p.m. where catering will be provided by the Oasis Coffee Shop. The Shewmaker Center for Workforce Technologies is located at 1000 Southeast Eagle Way in Bentonville.

First aid to be topic

Hobbs State Park will offer a two-day first aid course which immerses participants in basic wilderness medicine procedures, preparing individuals to take immediate action when an outdoor activity doesn't go as planned and 911 responders are hours away. Time is split between interactive classroom sessions and hands-on field scenarios to prepare participants and help them quickly develop basic backcountry medical care skills.

Tim Burroughs, NREMT/EMT-W, team leader with Washington County Search and Rescue, will lead this course, which is accepted by the Boy Scouts of America.

The course will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 24-25 at Hobbs State Park visitor center, located on Arkansas 12, just east of the Arkansas 12 and War Eagle Road intersection. The cost of the course is $135.

Nacif to lecture

Gerardo Jaso Nacif, a professor of the prestigious school Colegio Madrid and eco-photographer for the prominent Mexican newspaper La Jornada, will visit the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith for a lecture at 11 a.m. Nov. 27 in the theater of Windgate Art & Design, 535 N. Waldron Road.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, seeks to inform and enlighten students on his view of the ecology of Mexico and how his work as photographer visiting various important natural habitats of his country has affected his teaching. The talk will be in Spanish with short English translations.

Singers wanted

Singers are wanted to join a one-time opportunity to sing Handel's Christmas Messiah at 3 p.m. Dec. 9 at Bella Vista Community Church, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd. There will be no rehearsals for this impromptu gathering.

History sought

The Department of Arkansas Heritage seeks the public's assistance in collecting materials for an upcoming traveling exhibition on African American schools and education in Arkansas.

DAH is curating a traveling exhibit on the history of African American education in Arkansas. The Department invites anyone with any artifacts, memorabilia, or oral histories related to African American schools and education to submit it for consideration.

Archivist Danielle Butler will guest curate the exhibit. Once complete, schools, museums and other institutions across the state will be able to book the exhibit to come to their location.
