Voters march into polls to light path to future

The caravan arrived on Election Day, Nov. 6, called the American voter -- the invasion within of votes giving the glimmer of light, hope to the future of truth, justice again in the country.

Despite progress, hate still won in Arkansas

I applaud the voters of District 4 for backing Greg Leding for his Senate seat. I also applaud District 84 for putting Denise Garner into Charlie Collins' seat. But that's still way short for the state of Arkansas voters.

My fellow Arkansawyers and I had a chance to help our country stop the hate of Donald J. Trump. Arkansas voters blew it.

The governor early in his campaign was using Trump's name in his ads. After the tariffs that hurt Arkansas farmers, he dropped Trump's name, but he still backs Trump's hate. So does Womack, who's proud to use Trump's name. Same so for Westerman, Attorney General Rutledge and the rest of our Republican legislators in our state.

Arkansas had a chance to prove our state is the No. 2 state to live in in the United States. But all the voters did was show our state is as hateful and no better than No. 50 on the list of the best places to live in the U.S.

When I was standing at the corner of the Washington County Courthouse with my homemade sign, with "Vote hate out" on one side and "Dump Trump" on the other, I was campaigning for our state's children and grandchildren. Being a lifetime Arkansawyer, I love my state. Though I did get more thumbs up than I got flipped off or cussed at by young and old, I had a glimmer of hope that my state was going to make a statement against Trump's hate and division. I am so sorry for our state. I ask myself, is it the transplants that have moved into my state or has Trump poisoned my fellow Arkansawyers' minds? Or has my home-state turned as hateful and greedy as the rest of the United States?

What I'm mostly sorry for is ... our children and grandchildren and their children.

Next chance comes in 2020. It's up to all of us to make that statement. If we don't, shame on us. Trump wins.

Newspaper offers a lot, but here are some tips

Now that I am a retiree, I love my morning paper even more.

Sey Young's column about quails was so nicely written that I smiled all day and cut it out to share. Then Friday, goofy Gary Smith cracked me up. Once again, I will share the column with folks far and wide.

My husband reads the sports news first as he says "it's always good news for someone."

So we drink our coffee, discuss the editorials and read just about everything.

My two suggestions would be to cut down the random violence in the "In the News" column on the left side of the front page. They have no resolution and are often horrendous. Also, bring back the full-size color photos of the high school homecoming courts. They have always been a sweet local touch.

I do think John Brummett is a prophet, that the coverage of the task force for a new shelter in Bentonville has been good and I love the far-ranging articles on religion. Becca Martin-Brown is a jewel and covers so many things for us Northwest Arkansas folks.

We value good journalism and honest reporters. The Democrat-Gazette gives us both.
