SPRINGDALE -- Incumbent Mike Lawson defeated first-time candidate Eve Smith in the race for City County seat for Ward 4. The ward covers the central part of the city, including downtown, and the northeast corner.

The complete but unofficial vote totals were:

• Lawson: 6,849 (58%)

• Smith: 4,960 (42%)

Lawson, 54, is the managing partner of Fazt Lube and Service in the city and has served 5 1/2 years on the council.

He previously said a priority is making sure the $2oo million provided by the a bond issue voters approved in February is spent wisely. He noted the bond issue has been a big shot in the arm for the fast-growing city, allowing it to accomplish projects that were past due.

"The taxpayers saw that we needed the bond, and the taxpayers are making this happen," he said during the campaign.

Smith, 44, is director of exhibitions and public programs at the Arts Center of the Ozarks.

City Council members earn $10,200 annually and serve four-year terms.
