State wreck kills teen; driver identified in Little Rock crash

A teenager died after being thrown from a sport utility vehicle early Saturday, according to the Arkansas State Police, which also identified a man killed in a crash earlier this month.

The single-vehicle crash that killed the 17-year-old happened around 12:15 a.m. in the 8700 block of Arkansas 25 in the Cleburne County town of Concord, state police said.

The teen was traveling north in a 1995 Geo Tracker when it crossed the centerline and left the road before hitting a culvert and overturning.

The teen was thrown out and suffered fatal injuries, according to authorities. No one else was reported hurt.

The report did not identify the boy or say what caused the SUV to cross the centerline.

The state police agency identified a 23-year-old man who died earlier this month when the vehicle he was driving left a Little Rock road and “impacted a house.”

The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. July 21 as Derrick Smith of Little Rock was traveling west on Southboro Court near Southboro Drive, according to a report.

Smith’s 1997 Yamaha left the road and “impacted” a nearby residence, the police said. The type of vehicle he was driving was not immediately clear.

Smith was taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock, where he died of his injuries, the report said. An obituary said the 23-year-old died the same day as the crash.

No one else was reported hurt.

The weather was clear and roads were dry at the time of both crashes, police reported.
