A final push

Everything has an Arkansas connection. We learned that years ago.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Congress, with its term coming to a close, still has unfinished business on the docket pertaining to Syria. That is, there is a bill wafting through the halls that would employ, ahem, “coercive economic means” on the Syrian government, to punish it for its many atrocities against its own people.

Many of these atrocities have been documented and made public, thanks to a defector most only know as Caesar. The man (we think) is a former Syrian police officer who was hired by the regime to photograph its campaign of torture. He did so. While making copies. Which he then smuggled out of Syria. These photos now are proof of the al-Assad regime’s crimes. Soon, let’s hope, the photos will be presented as evidence. In a courtroom.

There are many folks around the world who’d like for this Congress to act soonest. Including the Syrian Emergency Task Force, which was included in Caesar’s story in the Journal.

The task force has offices in Washington. But it got its start in central Arkansas with a couple of activists who decided that civil war needed explaining to America’s heartland. And have done so admirably.

Everything has an Arkansas connection. Which makes us proud.
