Race the Base entrants run around mountain

A trail is just a trail, until somebody offers to time you, then it becomes a race course. Race the Base Trail Run offers runners just that at 9 a.m. Saturday in Pinnacle Mountain State Park.

Race parking and the starting line will be in Stuckey Field, which is directly west of Arkansas 300 and the park day-use area.

The 4-mile course begins with gravel road for approximately a half mile, switches to paved trail for three-quarters of a mile and finishes with 2.75 miles of technical single track. There will be one water station halfway through the race.

The course is recommended for experienced trail runners but, for the inexperienced runner, "technical single track" means there will be roots and rocks and there won't be a lot of room for passing.

General codes of conduct include staying on the right-hand side of the trail and giving other runners a heads-up if you're passing them, which can be as simple as saying, "On your left." Headphones are highly discouraged.

Online registration is $30 before midnight Thursday. Race-day registration will cost an extra $5.

Before the race, packet pickup will be 3-6 p.m. Friday at Go! Running, 1819 N. Grant St. Race-day registration and packet pickup will be available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Stuckey Field.

Every preregistered runner will receive a T-shirt. Race-day registrants will receive shirts while they last.

Awards will be given to the top three finishers based on age categories.

There will be a free Kingfisher Kids half-mile fun run after Race the Base is over (about 10:45 a.m.). It's available to kids 12 and under, and each child will receive a finisher's medal.

Post-race refreshments will be available.
