BENTONVILLE -- Glenn Latham plans to seek the Republican nomination for Benton County sheriff in 2018, he announced Monday.

He ran as an independent candidate for sheriff and lost in the November election.

Latham, 46, of Highfill is a former Benton County Sheriff's Office detective. He now works for Wal-Mart.

He said he made the decision after discussions with his wife and daughter.

Latham, if elected, said he would establish hiring standards, institute a fair and progressive discipline system and build the future leaders of the department while also working with local police departments.

"My belief remains the office of sheriff and law enforcement should be nonpartisan and the sheriff answers to the people and the Constitution," Latham said. "The sheriff does not legislate but must uphold the law of the land and be the keeper of the peace in his/her role as sheriff."

Shawn Holloway is in his first term as Benton County sheriff. Holloway, a Republican, defeated Latham in November. Holloway garnered 72 percent of the vote, and Latham received 28 percent.

"I look forward to the campaign and once again interacting with voters of Benton County," Latham said.

The primary will be May 8.

Joseph Pruitt, a former deputy for the Sheriff's Office, said he's supporting Latham. "In my time working with Glenn, I have found him totally trustworthy and incorruptible," Pruitt said. "He has a true passion for the citizens of this county and to law enforcement."

Pruitt said Latham is honest and reliable and has a high moral standard.
