The chess team from Lincoln Middle School is the K-6 Unrated National Chess Champion. They competed in a national elementary tournament May 6-8 in Nashville, Tenn. Team members are Luis Calvillo, Jace Birkes, Kaleb Roy, Tristan Raines, Elizabeth Bryant, Symphony Richards, Chilong Vang, Justus Thao, Nathan Lee, Diego Trillo, Ty Burks, Paulo Ortiz and coaches Ryan Billingsley, Ivan Huffmaster and Bekka McAfee. Birkes, Roy, Vang, Trillo and Ortiz finished in the top 10 of their divisions.

Lake County Forest Preserve

Kayrat Bektemirov of Fayetteville participated last month in the Lake County (Ill.) Forest Preserve's Service Learning Day. Of several different trips in the North Chicago suburban area, Bektemirov worked cutting brush and planting trees.

Georgia State University

Katherine Key of Fayetteville and Michelle Harris of Fayetteville were recognized during the recent Andrew Young School of Policy Studies' Honors Day at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Key was given the Andrew Young Award, and Harris was named a continuing Andrew Young Fellow.

The awards, established in honor of Ambassador Andrew Young, are given annually to outstanding student or students pursuing doctoral degrees in economics, public policy or criminal justice. Each award supports three years of doctoral study.

Harding University

A number of local students of Harding University in Searcy are participating in study abroad programs. Students spend the time immersed in the culture of the countries they visit, cultivate new relationships with fellow students and residents of the countries, and take classes exploring the culture and the people.

Students include Katherine Howell of Bentonville, three months in Florence Italy; Taylor Spinks of Prairie Grove, three months in Florence, Italy; Jordan Scott of Springdale, six weeks student teaching in Scotland; and Kristen Flesner of Gentry, six weeks study in Florence, Rome, Vienna and London.

University of Evansville

University of Evansville (Ind.) student Holyn Marshall of Bentonville has been named to the school's spring semester dean's list. Marshall is majoring in management.

Nazareth College

Amanda Johnson of Rogers graduated May 8 from Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y., with a doctoral degree in physical therapy.

Western Arkansas Technical Center

Students attending the Western Arkansas Technical Center at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith have been recognized for superior achievement in a special awards ceremony, which included the announcement of outstanding students, Starfish awards, director's honor roll and SkillsUSA Gold Star members.

Outstanding WATC Students included students attending classes on the UAFS campus, as well as students from the programs offered by a satellite center on the Waldron High School campus. Students earn a 3.0 or higher grade-point average and demonstrated honesty, integrity and a strong work ethic. Along with a plaque, outstanding WATC students received $500 book scholarships to continue their education at UAFS.

WATC director's honor roll awards were presented to 100 students who earned cumulative grade-point averages of 3.75 or higher.

SkillsUSA Gold Star members earned more than 25 participation points throughout the school year. Students collected points by attending SkillsUSA functions and volunteering in the community. These students earned $300 book scholarships to UAFS.

Oklahoma State University

Erin Wood of Rogers, a psychology major at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, was presented with an Honors College hood May 24. The degree is the highest academic distinction awarded to those receiving OSU undergraduate degrees, with grade-point average of 3.5 or higher an completing additional hours of academic requirements.

Wood also was initiated into the school's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honor society on April 21. The honor society requires nomination and approval by chapter members and a ranking in the top 10 percent of the class.

Kansas Wesleyan University

Heather N. Wilson of Bentonville, a women's basketball player at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan., was honored by the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference for her academic achievements and named Academic All-KCAC. Student-athletes must earn a minimum 3.33 grade-point average, achieve at least sophomore academic status and letter in their respective sport.

Wilson was also named as a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete for the 2015-2016 academic year. These athletes attended their schools for at least two full academic years, with grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher.

University of Central Arkansas

The University of Central Arkansas in Conway has chosen several local incoming students for the Norbert O. Schedler Honors College after ull-day interviews on campus. Honors Scholars receive UCA's best scholarship package, reside in a living-learning community in Jefferson W. Farris Honors Hall and participate in an interdisciplinary curriculum, with opportunities for service learning, project-based education, collaborative work, undergraduate research and travel or internship support.

UCA honors students include Fayetteville: Emily Bullington of Fayetteville, Halle Lambert of Fayetteville, Dexter Decker of Rogers, Sarah Kapity of Rogers, Danielle Devecsery of Farmington, Hannah Foster of Bella Vista, Lauren Little of Gentry, Xochitl Shields of Springdale and Rebecca Uptegrove of Siloam Springs.

Oklahoma City University

Oklahoma City University announced its spring 2016 honor rolls.

The president's honor roll includes students who maintain grade-point averages of 3.9 or higher. Alyssa Cover and Madison Carey, both of Fayetteville, were named to the president's roll.

The dean's honor roll includes students with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Students include Makayla Osgood of Bentonville; Tyra Bullock of Fayetteville; Leah Haynor, Natalie Chapman and Mackenzie Blair, all of Fort Smith; Adrienne Pierce of Garfield; Austin Rice and Brandon Elder, both of Rogers; and Elizabeth Larsen and Stacey Hayes, both of Springdale.

Graceland University

Several local students received degrees during the May 1 commencement ceremonies at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

Alexandria Krabbenhoft of Rogers graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree with a major in mathematics. Kellie Chacanaca of Springdale, Brent Rush of Siloam Springs and Dana Howard of Rogers each graduated with a master of science in nursing.

Henderson State University

Henderson State University in Arkadelphia held spring commencement May 13 at Carpenter Haygood Stadium. Graduates included Kaitlyn Cannedy of Bella Vista; Roberto Sucre of Bentonville; Brock May of Booneville; Michael Meador of Charleston; Bethany Weed of Clarksville; Jonathan Buchanan; and Sheldon Hayes, all of Fayetteville; Kenrick Burns of Fort Smith; Judy Fields of Greenwood; Christopher Holland of Lamar; Megan Ross of Rogers; Jessica Glass of Siloam Springs; Cody McAbee, Emily Reynebeau and Naccaman Williams II, all of Springdale; Hannah Bender of Tontitown; and Leigh Hayne of Van Buren.

Williams Baptist College

Several local students were named to the 2016 spring honor rolls at Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge.

The president's list includes students with 4.0 grade-point average, including Jovane Salinas of Rogers, Hunter Marshall of Harrison, Betsy Ryan of Harrison, Jessica Stovall of Omaha.

Dean's list students earned grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher, including Brandon Brigance of Gentry, Ethan Risley of Farmington, Gabby Dixon of West Fork.

Champlain College

Abner Herrera of Rogers, a 2016 graduate of Champlain College in Burlington, Vt., participated in the 2016 Game Studio Senior Show at the school. Game design, game art and animation, management of creative media and game programming majors created nine different games that were presented to game industry recruiters. After the games were presented, recruiters had the chance to meet the seniors, try their games and select candidates to interview the following day.

Herrera graduated from Champlain College with a degree in Game Programming on May 14. Champlain College's 138th commencement was held at Edmunds Field in Burlington, Vt. A total of 537 undergraduates received their associate and bachelors degrees during the ceremony.

William Woods University

Tiffany Rhame of Farmington and Ashley White of Rogers, both seniors were named to the honor rolls at William Woods University in Fulton.

The New School

The New School announced Stella Greenhill as its inaugural Pauline and Don Whitaker Family Scholar recipient. She was selected based on academic excellence, good citizenship and support of the school. She will receive a scholarship of $5,000 per year, renewed annually, and totaling $20,000 over the course of her upper school career. Three scholarships remain available for the 2016-2017 academic year for rising freshman.

LeTourneau University

LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, recently named students to the school's honor roll

Luke Funk of Siloam Springs, a senior majoring in engineering, was named to the spring 2016 president's list, with a 4.0 grade-point average.

Matthew Bolognani of Green Forest, a sophomore majoring in engineering technology, was named to the spring 2016 dean's list, with a grade-point average between 3.50 and 3.99.
