Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/MICHAEL WOODS --02/16/2012-- Barbara Hunter Cox, Director of Teaching and Learning with the Arkansas Public School Resource Center, speaks to local teachers and administrators during the first training meeting Thursday afternoon in Prairie Grove for Northwest Arkansas districts involved in the Achieving By Changing project of the Arkansas Public School Resource Center. There are five or six rural districts and one charter school involved with this program, which is designed to help them with implementing the new Common Core State Standards.
Instead of having students memorize seldom-used words such as homonym or onomatopoeia, teachers can help develop in their students a more sophisticated vocabulary by teaching them words that offer more precision.
