TANKER TREATED Members of Gravette’s Fire Department add the chemical F-500 to the contents of a water tanker near the scene Tuesday of a 2,000-gallon gasoline leak in Gravette. The chemical is used to reduce surface tension of water and prevent combustible material and flammable liquids from burning. The treated water was later flushed through sewer lines to cleanse the sewer of any gasoline.

AIMING TO SAVE: Sam Reyna, energy management educator for the Bentonville School District, aims an infrared temperature gauge at a heating vent Tuesday while responding to a service alert at Bentonville High School. Reyna monitored the changes in air temperature while talking to Tim Brasel, the district’s environmental specialist and maintenance coordinator, who manipulated the room’s compressor from a building several miles to the west. Reyna’s office controls the computerized system that automatically adjusts the temperatures in every room throughout the district’s 15 schools.

Kayla Norbash, a preschool child care worker at Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter, holds one of about 30 children in the shelter’s care. The shelter provides emergency housing for children throughout Arkansas removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect. Shelter administrators are coordinating a $9 million endowment fund in preparation for an expansion of services in 2011.
