Artist’s childhood near disaster site inspires work
I’m always close to a reactor,” says Marat Paransky. He lives about 25 miles from the site of Fermi 1, the partial meltdown of which inspired the book and songs titled “We Almost Lost Detroit.” But that wasn’t the one that would shape his future — and his future art project. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, just two months before the Chernobyl disaster, he and his entire family lived in the shadow of that event. He’s careful to point out that he’s not a Chernobyl victim; others were affected far more gravely. But his family did leave Kiev for a time, and his father collected pages of newsprint related to the nearby accident. Continue reading...
