At 49, former Olympic kayaker Michael Herbert of Rogers still competes annually, winning races around the country. He can sustain a speed of 11 mph and has been clocked at17mphinan all-out sprint in his 17-foot-long K1 racing kayak. By comparison, most paddlers in touring kayaks can sustain a speed of maybe 4 mph and sprint to about 7 mph or less.
