Kiera Ainsworth, a Holt Middle ...

By Michael Woods

Kiera Ainsworth, a Holt Middle School sixth-grader, attempts to spell a word during the Holt Middle School spelling bee Friday afternoon in Fayetteville. Seventh-grader Alex Lim went on to win the bee and will move onto the next round to compete in the Washington County Spelling Bee with the winner of that advancing to the Arkansas State spelling bee in Little Rock to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington.

Why would you report on a child losing a competition? I imagine she feels bad enough, now it's reported in the paper for all of NWA to see that she lost. If you had to publish the picture of this girl instead of the winner, it would have been simple to caption it in a more positive light. For example, "Kiera Ainsworth, a holt middle school student, attempts to spell the word given to her in one of the final rounds of the competition." This would have let the readers know she did well instead of a harsh reminder that she was eliminated.
