Marguerite Anne Shaw Buckley, age 80, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family in Shreveport, Louisiana on Saturday, September 29, 2018. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Head of Texas Street, at 11am on Wednesday, October 3, 2018. Anne was born May 5, 1938 in Conway, Arkansas, the youngest child of George Grover and Marguerite (Blanks) Shaw. After spending an idyllic younger life in the small town of Conway with her loving parents, sister "Nina," brother "Buddy," and many friends, she graduated from Conway High School in 1956. She attended Cottey Women's College in Nevada, Mo., for one year and then transferred to the University of Arkansas where she graduated in 1960. She loved her time at Arkansas as a member of the Chi Omega sorority, was involved in many clubs and campus activities, and excelled at the business school. Upon graduation from Arkansas, Anne enjoyed using her natural accounting talents while working at a bank in Little Rock, Arkansas. She subsequently married and after a few years of worldwide travel moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where has she lived very joyfully until her passing. While in Shreveport, Anne has been very active in First Methodist Church where she participated in the Prayer Ministry, Women of the Church and also needlepointed one of the altar kneelers for the Sanctuary. She was very engaged in the Shreveport community and participated as a board member of the Shreveport Opera and the Cotillion Club, and a member of the Demoiselle Club, Hypatia Club, The Hypogeum Society, English Speaking Union, Corner the Market Syndicate, The Centenary Muses, and the Junior League. While her children were in school in the 70s and early 80s, she was very involved with Southfield School, the Book Fair, and all of its programs and fundraisers. Anne loved being with her friends and each week she enjoyed playing bridge with either "big Bridge" or "little bridge," discussing literature with book club, or attending any of the community arts events, including the Opera, Symphony and many live theater productions. Most of all, Mama loved her family. She was tireless in supporting her children during their youth and every day of their lives. She participated in their school activities at Southfield School, she attended every sports game, she was steadfast in her love in so very many ways. Catherine Anne and Stuart were thrilled when she had the opportunity to become re-acquainted with a wonderful man she had known at the University of Arkansas, Wayne Buckley, and became very happily married in 2003. In addition to all of these interests, the last few years have been centered around travelling with Wayne to many wonderful places in Europe, Asia, and Africa and also to see friends across the United States. While at home, Mama enthusiastically tended her beautiful garden. Some of her favorite places were far and deep, in delicate areas that no one else knew existed, where you could find her caring for a plant that she had been given, or one that she had brought to Shreveport many years ago from her mother or grandmother's gardens and kept lovingly nourished and thriving all this time. She knew each one. Anne Shaw Buckley was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Virginia "Nina" Shaw Hoy; and brother-in-law, Walter Wilson Hoy. She is survived by her husband, Dr. John Wayne Buckley; daughter, Catherine Anne Couch Provine; son, Stuart Grantham Couch; brother, George Grover "Buddy" Shaw Jr. (Chindarat); nephews and nieces, Jeff Hoy (Mary), Mark Hoy (Janie), Doug Hoy (Leslie), Rebecca Smith, Marguerite Tyson (Terry), Scott Shaw and Sally Schwendenmann; many beloved Hoy and Shaw grandnieces and grandnephews; and treasured Buckley grandchildren-by-marriage. Honorary pallbearers will be J. Pat Beard III, Hani E. Dehan, O. Delton Harrison Jr., Dr. F. Dean Griffen, Charlton H. Lyons Jr., John M. Madison Jr., Justin R. Querbes III, Gordon E. Rountree, and Dr. David J. Werner. Anne Shaw Buckley had a beautiful smile that made the room warm and everyone in it feel better. Her generosity of time and spirit touched many. She was the sweetest person in the world and she will be missed greatly.
