Mary Hatfield

Mary Virginia Moore Hatfield died suddenly on September 30, 2017. She had just recently turned 80. Mary was born to Eugene Wilson Moore and Marguerite Montgomery Moore on September 24, 1937. She was born and raised in Harrison Arkansas and met Lynn Hatfield at Harrison High School. They were married in May of 1956. In 1968, Mary and Lynn moved to Lubbock, Texas, where Lynn joined the Texas Tech faculty in the Department of Physics. Mary received her Master's Degree in Medieval English literature from Texas Tech University and taught language and literature in that department for over 20 years. Mary was always vitally involved in the greater community of Lubbock, concentrating her energies on social programs that help improve lives. She spent many years volunteering for Reading Is Fundamental and was very committed to the Girl Scouts, serving on the local board for many years, and recognized with the Girl Scout Women of Distinction Award. She loved the outdoors and all creatures great and small. Mary organized and served as president for the Humane Society of West Texas for over a decade and proudly placed many furry friends with grateful families throughout the region. In her honor, the Human Society of West Texas has established the annual Mary V Hatfield Service to Animals Award. Mary was also a great defender of human rights and remained active in the Democratic Party throughout her life. In 2004, Mary was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in Boston and a founding member of Texas Democratic Women, South Plains Chapter. She also served as a Lubbock County precinct chair and as the SDEC Representative to the Texas Democratic Party for West Texas. Mary is survived by her husband, Lynn; her children, Greg, Chris, and Ginny; and her grandchildren, William and Tatum. She is also survived by her brothers, Wilson and Jeff, her sisters-in-law, Patty, BJ, and Kay, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends. There will be a viewing and visitation at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 6025 82nd Street, Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, October 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will also be a Celebration of Life on Saturday October 7, from 2 to 5 PM at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts, 511 Ave. K.
