Mary Ann Walker Abrego

Mary Ann Walker Abrego, 81, died in Fort Smith, Ark., on March 3, 2017. She was born in North Little Rock, Ark., on Sept. 22, 1935 to Douglas and Mathel Walker. She moved to Fort Smith as a child and graduated from Fort Smith Senior High School in 1953. She attended Mary Baldwin College, and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. After her marriage to Frederick Gilbert Abrego she graduated from the University of Houston, with Honors. In all of her years in college she never made a grade below an A. Mary Ann's love of gardening was evident in the beautiful gardens and patios that she designed and tended wherever she lived. She was a Master Gardener. She was an excellent cook who enjoyed entertaining friends. Mary Ann was a prolific reader on many subjects. She enjoyed music and loved to dance. She could follow any partner in any dance, but particularly loved to jitterbug. Her home was filled with beautiful paintings and other art pieces, but most of all she loved her friends. She will always be remembered for her wit and fun loving spirit. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred, her son Frederick Douglas Abrego, and her daughter, Anne Maestri Abrego Shock. She was also preceded in death by her longtime companion, Judge Les Evitts. She is survived by her granddaughter Jordan Anne-Leigh Wright of Fort Smith, and her longtime friend Birney Marquis of Dallas, Texas. Her close friends are especially grateful to Janie and Les Evitts III for their constant attention and concern, and to Bruce Goodman and Hank Autrey for their devotion to her. They also wish to thank the ladies of Loving Care and Peachtree Hospice for their care of Mary Ann. A Graveside Service will be held at Forest Park Cemetery on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 11 a.m. under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
