Donald Ray Springston passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 23, 2017. He was 66 years old. Don was born in Springdale, Ark. on August 2, 1950. Don was a decorated Veteran, serving one tour as a Recon Marine during the Vietnam era. Don is survived by his wife, Pamela Hoffman Springston of Chocowinity, N.C., his parents, Don and Thelma Springston, a brother, Kenneth Springston (Linda), and a son, Jeffrey Springston (Kirsten)all of Springdale, Ark. and his daughter, Joy Marie Culp (John)of Lenoir, N.C. He is also survived by daughters, Wendy Godley (Carlton) of Washington, N.C., Donna Elks of Raleigh, N.C., and a son, Mark Elks (Melanie) of Wilmar, N.C. Eleven grandchildren, Joy Culp, Logan Culp, Emily Culp, Julian Culp, Phillip Springston, George Springston, Alarie Elks, Trey Elks, Desoray Elks, CJ Elks, and Haley Hutchins. During the Vietnam War he earned a Combat Service Medal. He enjoyed being and working outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was an avid fan of Native American culture, art and history and he was honored to be a fourth Cherokee and a US Marine. Don was fiercely patriotic and loved watching westerns and was known as a practical joker with a big heart who loved his family. Don lived all over the United States during his life, enjoying the beauty of living in 48 different states. He was handy with a hammer and a saw, he always had a supporting hand and a listening ear. Don had a generous and brave nature, he spent his entire life loving his family, animals and his country. He was loved by all and his laughter and generous spirit will deeply be missed. A celebration of Don's life with Military Honors will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2017 in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with Pastor Phillip Jethro officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Hillside Funeral Service & Cremations, 4500 Hwy. 264 East, Washington, N.C. has been given the honor of being entrusted with serving the Springston family.
