Kathryn Lucile Leigh

Kathryn Lucile Leigh, Lucile or Lucy to all who knew her, died peacefully on September 12, 2016. She was born July 15, 1931 to Kathryn Evans Shukers and Burton Twiss Shukers. Lucile will be remembered for her sharp wit, her earthy sense of humor, and her generosity of spirit. She put people at ease instantly, and made deep-seated and lasting friendships. Her strong and determined will served her well throughout life's journeys and her open heart and adventurous spirit allowed her to fully celebrate life's joys. Lucile graduated from Warrensburg High School, Warrensburg, Missouri in June of 1949 as valedictorian of her high school class. She earned her Bachelor's degree with Honors in Accounting and Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Denver in May of 1980. Before and after earning her degree Lucile held numerous executive level positions in medical and mental health care administration. Lucile married her high school sweetheart, Elbert Herman Leigh in March of 1951. Lucile and Elbert enjoyed 64 years of marriage until his death in May of 2015. She truly believed in Elbert's contributions to the medical profession and avidly supported his pursuits. Lucile worked as Executive Secretary for the head of the Department of Pathology at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri while Elbert attended Medical School at the same institution. In 1962 Lucile and Elbert moved to Dubois, Wyoming where the two of them established the first primary care medical clinic in the town's history. Lucile made a significant and lasting impact in the lives of her three children and eight grandchildren. Lucile enjoyed playing the piano and clarinet and passed her love of music to her family. Lucile was a voracious reader and engaged others thoughtfully with ideas that grew out of her insatiable curiosity and exceptional intellect. Lucile's love and devotion to her family were beyond compare and were particularly evident as Elbert's primary care giver during the last few years of his life as he battled Alzheimer's. Lucile is survived by her eight grandchildren and her eldest son, Steve who practices law in Kansas City, Missouri, her daughter, Vicki who works for the American Forest Foundation in Evergreen, Colorado and her youngest son, Jason who works as a consumer researcher in Chicago, Illinois. She will live on in the loving memories of her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
