Paul "Grandad" Gayer, age 92, of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, October 25, 2016. He was born December 12, 1923 in Goshen, Arkansas, the son of Charlie and Minnie Garrett Gayer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Langham Gayer to whom he married October 27, 1945; a daughter, Sharon McKinney; a brother, Bud Gayer and two sisters, Helen Robbins and Pauleda Sariego. Paul was an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Lambda, where he served on the advisory board. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church since 1952, serving as treasurer and usher. Paul served in the Army towards the end of World War II and returned to Fayetteville, where he became a pillar of the community through banking and work with local charities. He began his career at First National Bank of Fayetteville, and was there until 1986, when he joined a group that founded the Bank of Fayetteville. Through banking and real estate Paul became a friend and mentor to many throughout the community. He never met a person he didn't like, and was known as "Grandad" by most people younger than him. Paul loved travel, gardening, helping others, and most importantly, family. Spending time with his great-grandkids was when he was happiest. He is survived by a daughter Brenda Carmack & her husband Bill of Fayetteville; two sisters, Genell Bienert of Portland, Oregon and Ruth Heckart of Wichita, Kansas; two grandsons, Travis Garton & his wife Polly; Jason Garton & his wife Amber; four great-grandchildren, Isabel Garton, Stella Garton, Charlie Garton & Genevieve Garton. Visitation will be 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Moore's Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, followed by burial at Fairview Memorial Garden, under the direction of Moore's Chapel.
