John Jackson Garlinger Jr., 84, of Bentonville passed away Monday, October 10 in Springfield, Mo. following a traffic accident. He was born April 7, 1932 in Riverside, California to the late John Jackson Garlinger Sr. and Lois Allecia Schooler Garlinger. In his younger years he attended New Mexico Military Institute on a football scholarship, was the New Mexico Golden Gloves state champion and served his country during the Korean conflict. Following discharge, he returned to school at the University of New Mexico. John was especially proud of his achievements as a professional land surveyor, having assisted in many housing developments throughout California and building a successful land surveying company in Southern California with the love of his life, Judith Clow Garinger, who preceded him. Together for over 49 years, they worked side-by-side both in the business and at home. In addition to his parents and wife he was also preceded by his sister, Marjorie Watson; his brother, George Garlinger and his grandson, John Byers. John's interest in football never wavered from high school to college, as a member of Army's team and watching whoever was on TV today, he loved watching the game. In fact, games of most sorts. He especially loved playing board games and traveling across the country with his family… and often to visit extended family in the motorhome while whistling to big bands, Waylon or Willie on the 8 track. Following his retirement as a professional land surveyor, he continued to enjoy football, fellowship with Elks and his Tuesday night poker club. Survivors include his daughters, Heidi Scott and Suzy Byers (Robert) of Bentonville and Kathryn Wroten (Michael) of Maine; his brother, Earle Garlinger of Bentonville; grandchildren, Lauryn Garlinger, Grayson Scott (Jaime), Jared Scott and Rebecca Scott, Jack Wroten, Josh Wroten and Camryn Byers; numerous nieces, nephews, associates, poker buddies and dear friends. Services will be held at Callison-Lough Funeral Home in Bentonville with visitation Friday, October 14 from 4-7 p.m. with Funeral Celebration to follow. Private interment will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Callison-Lough Funeral Home in Bentonville. Online condolences may be expressed at www.CallisonLough.com.
