Jack Arnold Bergstrom

Jack Arnold Bergstrom, 91, died 6/21/2016. He was born May 5, 1925 to Arnold John Bergstrom and Katherine Banchi Bergstrom in Norway, Mich. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served on a submarine tender in the Pacific. He was educated at Central Michigan University and received his doctorate at Northern Illinois College of Optometry. Jack married Phyllis Denney in 1948. He established his optometric practice in Midland, Mich. where he practiced for 30 years, during which time he was active in Michigan Optometry Association, and served a term as president as well as holding local and national offices. He helped to establish Ferris College of Optometry in Big Rapids, Mich. and was also an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and local civic clubs. After retiring from his Midland office, he practiced optometry part-time in Gladwin, Mich. While residing in nearby Sugar Springs he was on the Sugar Springs Property Owners Association Board and served as chairman. Moving to Bella Vista in 1989, Jack became a member of United Lutheran Church, AARP Recycling, various golf groups, Gold Wings Chapter C and organized the Tuesday Riders group. He traveled to 48 states on his Gold Wing motorcycle. Other hobbies were flying, water sports, deer hunting and woodworking. Preceding him in death were his parents and his youngest son, Tom Carlisle Bergstrom in 2004. Surviving him are: his wife, Phyllis of nearly 68 years; his son, Chris and Fran Bergstrom, grandchildren, Anthony, Dane and Amoreena of St. Johns, Mich.; daughter, Sue and Charlie Griffin, grandchildren, Katie and Rory of Thayne, Wyo. and Denver, Colo.; a brother, Clifford and Ester Bergstrom of Tucson, Ariz. plus many nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at United Lutheran Church and interment of ashes at ULC Columbarium. Memorials may be made to United Lutheran Church or a favorite charity.
