Mary Isabel Boecker Heflin, age 91, of Fayetteville passed away Thursday Aug. 18, 2016. She was born Jan. 29, 1925 in Little Rock to William and Mattie Ramsour Boecker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Laverne Heflin and her son, Tommy Heflin. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Heflin Hunt of Fayetteville; grandson, Harrison Heflin Hunt of Fayetteville; sister-in-law, Mary LaJoyce Heflin Duncan of West Fork, Ark.; two nieces and one nephew, and their families. Mrs. Heflin was a graduate of Central High School in Little Rock and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with degrees in education and history. She was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. For thirty-five years, Mrs. Heflin, with her knowledge of government and history and her support of student activities, influenced students at Fayetteville High School. She sponsored the cheerleaders and Peppers including travel in and out of state in support of Bulldog teams. In addition, Mary served as a mentor to beginning teachers and administrators. Saying Mrs. Heflin was a Yellow Dog Democrat is an understatement. She was an avid fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Dallas Cowboys. As a member of Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Mrs. Heflin participated in the Walking Through the Bible Class and Circle of Faith (#5). Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday Aug. 22, 2016 at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville with burial to follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville.
