Frances Jean Cowne Hunton, of Fort Smith, Ark., passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2014 at the age of 89. Jean was born on June 10, 1926 to John and Emily Lane Cowne of Greenwood, Ark. After graduating from Greenwood High School, Jean received her teaching certificate from Arkansas State Teachers College (UCA), where she majored in music. Jean taught in both Greenwood and South Fort Smith before concentrating on raising a family when she and Wallace Hunton married and moved to Benton. An accomplished pianist, Jean played for several churches. She served in the choir at First United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing with her band the "Methodoos". Jean also treasured her extended family "sing alongs" with sister, brothers, nieces and nephews. Jean left for new adventures with Wally moving to Corpus Christi, Jamaica, Richmond, Va. as well as Little Rock before moving back to Fort Smith upon their retirement. The later years of her life were spent as a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. Jean is preceded in death by her husband B. Wallace Hunton. A lifelong Methodist, Jean was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church in Fort Smith, where she and Wally were married. Jean is survived by her two sons and their families. Drs. David and Teresa Hewett Hunton of Ft. Smith, grandchildren Sarah Victoria Hunton of Little Rock and John Hunton of Ft. Smith; Tom and Raynelle Hunton of The Woodlands, Texas, grandson Stephen Hunton and wife, Kristine , great-grandsons Adler, Beckett and Ison Hunton all of Dallas, Texas, grandson Patrick Hunton and wife, Bridgette, and great-grandson Levi Wallace Hunton of San Francisco. Visitation will be 1 p.m to 8 p.m Sunday, July 19 at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith, where the family will visit with friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held in Hartford Memorial Park, on Monday, July 20 at 11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at the Goddard United Methodist Church in Fort Smith at 1 p.m. Serving as pallbearers are Dr. Mark Bailey, Dr. Michael Wolfe, Martin Schrieber, John Hunton, Stephen Hunton, and Patrick Hunton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to Goddard United Methodist Church and the Sebastian County Humane Society.
