John B. Gentry, age 50, of Fayetteville passed away Friday July 10, 2015. He was born June 21, 1965 in Fort Ord, California, the son of Johnnie and Phyllis Gentry. He attained the status of Eagle Scout as well as the prestigious Order of the Arrow by the age of 12. Graduated from Murray State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice after which he began his career as a police officer with the Fayetteville Police Department. Corporal John Gentry Badge #149 began his career as a police officer with the Fayetteville Police Department on December 28, 1992. Over the course of his 22 years of service for the city of Fayetteville, Corporal Gentry worked in many different areas of the department. However, the bulk of his time was spent as a detective assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division. Corporal Gentry received many letters of appreciation and accommodation throughout his years of service with the department. He was recognized as "Officer of the Year" by the Fayetteville Lodge of the Arkansas State Fraternal Order of Police in 1995 as well as "Policeman of the Year" in 1998 by the National Exchange Club for his meritorious service to the city of Fayetteville. In addition, with members of his investigative unit, he received a Unit Meritorious Performance Award for his actions in 2003. With members of his patrol squad, he received three Unit Meritorious Performance Awards for his actions in 2014. Corporal Gentry was a dedicated member of the Fayetteville Police Department, and he was a dedicated servant to the citizens of Fayetteville. He was a good man, a good police officer, and a superior investigator. He was a good friend, and he will be missed by the members of his agency. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his son Colten, and his parents Johnnie and Phyllis Gentry. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m on Thursday July 16, 2015 at First Baptist Church in Fayetteville. All friends, family, and anyone who would like to honor John's memory are invited to attend.
