Selma Lee Hull Wineland

SELMA LEE HULL WINELAND was welcomed into this world by her parents, Lee and Anna Hull on Oct. 3, 1917, and peacefully departed her earthly life on April 24, 2015, after a full and loving life. Selma was born and grew up in Seminole, Okla. and with her study of piano and organ, her love of learning and reading, her cheerleading and tennis playing, and, perhaps most important of all, her love and devotion to God through her Catholic faith, she grew into a well-rounded young woman. After graduating from Seminole High School, Selma attended St. Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana. When her father died during her freshman year, she transferred to the University of Oklahoma to be closer to her mother. There she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, an affiliation she continued to enjoy throughout her life as an alumna. Selma fell in love and married Hugh Franklin Burnett before World War II. They were blessed with a son, Hugh, Jr. Franklin joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and died when his plane was shot down over Belgium in early 1944. Later that year her mother died, leaving her to care for her disabled aunt, Nell Sakach, who lived with Selma and her family for the rest of her life. After the war, Selma married Herbert Lee "Hody" Wineland and they began a life of devotion to each other and adventure in the world, which lasted for 59 years until his death in 2005. When Hody completed his medical training, they settled in Pine Bluff, Ark., where he went into private practice and they raised their seven children. Selma was very involved in St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving in many capacities in the Catholic Daughters of America and Altar Society, and as a Eucharistic minister. While her children attended the Annunciation Academy, later St. Joseph School, she served on the school board and in the parent-teacher association. Selma was also active in community organizations, including the Jefferson County Medical Auxiliary, Pine Bluff Junior League, and Pine Bluff Country Club Ladies Golf Association. Selma and Hody shared a passion for bridge and attained the status of Master Bridge Players. Selma's other passions were her family, the Razorbacks, cooking and travel. Selma and Hody were seasoned world travelers. One of their most memorable trips was to the Holy Land where they celebrated their 45th anniversary by renewing their marriage vows at the Franciscan Wedding Church in Cana, Israel. They were also among the first visitors to China when it was opened to the West. Selma was a blessing to all who knew her and she leaves her beautiful legacy with her children, Hugh F. Burnett (Sally), H. Lee Wineland (Pam), Pam Willis (Maurice), Daria Wineland (John Porton), Teresa Wineland (Keith Cooper), Vicki Perry (Jim), Greg Wineland (Angela) and her 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 3 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Funeral Home, 5800 W. 12th , Little Rock, Ark. followed by a rosary at 5:30 p.m. A celebration of her life Mass will be held on Monday, May 4 at 10 a.m. in St. Andrews Cathedral, 7th and Louisiana, Little Rock. Selma will be interred in Graceland Cemetery in Seminole, Okla. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ the King Church or to a hospice organization. Her family is deeply indebted to the staff of Parkway Care Center who provided excellent care during her last few years.
