Doug Maritan, 51, of Fayetteville, Ark., passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at Washington Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was born Nov. 5, 1962, in Tulsa, Okla., the son of Carl Eugene and Patricia Jean Maritan. Doug was a 1981 high school graduate of Tulsa Memorial High School where, as a senior, he earned the state's highest honor as a football player, the Oklahoma All-State Defensive Player of the Year. In recognition of his accomplishments in football, he was recently inducted into the Tulsa Memorial Football Hall of Fame. Doug went on to play linebacker for Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., where he also became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and graduated in 1985. Upon graduation from Oklahoma State, Doug chose Fayetteville as his home where he went on to succeed in several local businesses. Blessed with a passion to serve others and an adventurous spirit, Doug entered the food and beverage business in the late 80s but was also active in many, other business interests, including land development, home construction and several others. No business endeavor he entered, however, ever rivaled his greatest achievement — his love and passion for his two children and the time he spent coaching them in youth sports throughout their younger years. As a result, one of Doug's lasting achievements has been the incredible impact he has had on the lives of countless children that he had the opportunity to coach and mentor during those tender years. A selfless giver, his love of sports lead him to many successful years coaching football and basketball at the Boys and Girls Club of Fayetteville. Never ceasing in his commitment to his, and our, children. Doug continued his involvement with the kids by providing regular meals and snacks (and an occasional Snickers bar after the game) to the Woodland Junior High and Fayetteville High School football teams. Doug is survived by his wife, Kim Faggetti Maritan, son, Matthew Hale Maritan, and daughter, Lauren Kate Maritan, all of the home; lifelong "brother," Bart Glass of Atlanta, Ga.; aunt and uncle, Bob and Karen Dobbs of Bella Vista, Ark.; mother-in-law, Susan Faggetti; father-in-law, Marty Faggetti and wife, Gayle; and many other family members and close friends. A celebration of Doug's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Central United Methodist Church. Private burial services will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Doug Maritan Children's Memorial Trust, care of Chambers Bank, 1685 E. Joyce Blvd., Fayetteville, AR 72703, (888) 621-2996.
