Myra Joe Thomas Lanier

Myra Joe Thomas Lanier passed away Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, in Corsicana, Texas. She was born April 18, 1922, the daughter of Joseph and Irene Sullivan Thomas. She attended Mildred High School, and after graduating, she married Jasper Lanier in 1940, and they celebrated 53 years together. During World War II, Myra worked in civilian operations at Air Activities of Texas, a training field for beginning Air Force Cadets. Later she took a variety of courses at Navarro Junior College. Myra was involved in many activities at Mildred High School while her husband was teacher and administrator there. She was the pep squad sponsor, and substitute mom for all students and teachers who needed her. She became the administrative assistant and secretary for James Cerf and worked for him for 34 years. Myra was a lifelong Presbyterian and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Corsicana. She was a member of Kinsloe House and an avid bridge player. Preceding her in death were her husband; and her brother, Maurice Thomas. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Linda Rye and Randall Webb of Fayetteville, Ark.; sister-in-law, Reedith Krautter of Carrollton; nieces, Lynne Thomas of Dallas, Rubia Sherry of Dallas, Sherri Thomas of Seagoville, Sandy Dugger of Abilene, Ann Williams of Sarasota, Fla., and Ken Krautter of Carrollton; a host of cousins; the entire Thomas clan; and many friends. She was especially close to cousin Gertrude Walker to whom she spoke on the phone every night. Myra is also survived by adopted family members, Carolyn Garcia and Delores Hoover, special friends who cared for and loved her over the years. Special thanks to all the staff and residents at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village for their love and support. Visitation will be 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Conley officiating. Burial will follow at Eureka Cemetery.
