Donald Franklin Smith

Lt. Donald Franklin Smith, retired Navy, passed Oct. 24, 2014, in Rogers, Ark. He was born March 25, 1933, in Woodward, Okla., to J.P. and Georgia (Baldwin) Smith. He married Ruth Wellman in Clovis, N.M. To this marriage four children were born, Sherry, Donald Ray, Barbara and Beverly. They later divorced. He then married Letha Layne in Long Beach, Calif., and added three more daughters, Idella, Barbara and Carol. He served in the Navy from July 31, 1951, to Sept. 1, 1973, and served in the Korean War. He retired to Y City, Ark., and had lived there until August of 2013. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; sister, Norma; and brothers, Bill, Ted, Joe and Gary. Also preceding him were both wives; son, Donald; daughters, Barbara and Beverly; son-in-law, Charlie Walters; and grandsons, Maurice and Skyler, sons of Sherry. He is survived by daughters, Carol Walters of Lowell, Ark., and Sherry Metcalf of Woodward, Okla.; grandchildren, Michelle and husband, Tom Youell; great-grandchildren, Spencer and Mason, Rosemary Varnell, and Austin and Cadence of Wichita, Kan., Marcie Bozarth, and Pierce and Jade of Shattuck, Okla.
