Arthur William 'Mac' McCandless

Arthur William "Mac" McCandless, 89, of Fayetteville passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at his home. He was born Feb. 24, 1925, in Michigan City, Ind., to William McCandless and Agnes Spang McCandless. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946 during WWII, and from 1950 to 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He earned a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Inchon, Korea, as well as a Navy and Marine commendation medal, Navy presidential unit citation, Navy unit commendation, Marine Corps good conduct medal, Select Marine Corps reserve medal, American campaign medal, Asiatic Pacific campaign medal, Korean service medal and a WWII victory medal. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart as well as a Freemason belonging to Washington Lodge #1 as well a member of the Texarkana Lodge #341. He was a Woodman of the World youth leader for many years. He retired after 40 years of service with the state of Arkansas Employment Security Division. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eugene, Norman and Harold; and sister, Ruth. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Josephine McCandless of the home; daughter, Marion McCandless of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Weldon Orand and wife, Jacqueline, of West Fork and Victoria Stout of Goshen; five great-grandchildren; and several other family members and friends. The family will receive friends Monday, March 31, 2014, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at Beard's Funeral Chapel, with Chaplain Paul Woodhouse officiating.
