George Merwin

George Merwin, formerly of New Haven, Conn., passed away on June 8, 2014. He was born July 26, 1919, in Connecticut to George Platt Merwin and Kate (Oakley) Merwin. He married his high school sweetheart, Elinore "Norrie" Bennett, on Oct. 2, 1942. Norrie preceded him in death in 2009. While living In Connecticut, he started the Aladdin Tool and Dye Company which he operated for over 25 years. They retired to Arkansas in 1975. Soon afterward, he and Gene Thrasher of Bentonville formed a partnership, Osage Properties, participating in land development and managing rental properties. George and Norrie built a home on Beaver Lake, which they loved, and became an integral part of the lake community. He was active in the Beaver Lake Breeze Lovers Sailing Club and the Northwest Arkansas Boat Club. He was known for the hospitality shown on his houseboat, Aladdin, hosting many friends and neighbors as well as visitors from other states and overseas. He loved taking folks out on the houseboat and playing the part of Beaver Lake guide. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to a charity of your choice. Mr. Merwin leaves behind no immediate relatives, but many very good and supportive friends. Mr. Merwin has willed his body to the University of Arkansas Medical School. There will be a private memorial and blessing of the ashes at a later date.
