Robert A. Darling

Robert A. Darling, 88, passed away July 28, 2014, in Springdale. He was born on Oct. 20, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Arthur J. and Ruth (Hardman) Darling. He was the loving husband of Margaret (Shackelton) Darling. Robert served in the Army for four years. He was a private first class (PFC) assigned to Company C, 260th Infantry Regiment, 65th Infantry Division. During that time, he traveled from France to Germany with 40 men and eight horses. He was in combat for 93 days in Lenz, Austria. At the end of the hostilities, he had earned two Bronze Star Medals, two Battle Stars to European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 18 years, lifetime member of the VFW, Rogers Post 3031 and the American Legion. Robert is survived by his wife, Margaret of Rogers; son, Arthur H. Darling of Cave Springs; three daughters, Paulette Chiuppi and her husband, Henry, of Illinois, Therese Streng and her husband, Tom, of Illinois, and Mary L. Gaertner of Rogers; sister, Carol June Trammell of Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Harold Darling. A funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with burial and military honors to follow at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, July 31, 2014, from 5 until 7 p.m. Donations can be made to the local Coast Guard Auxiliary, VFW or American Legion.
