John Mell Herring

John Mell Herring, age 92, of West Fork passed away July 25, 2014. He was born in Breckenridge, Texas, to Gustave and Luba Herring. He graduated from Kilgore Junior College where he excelled in tennis, attended Louisiana Tech and graduated from Southern State in Magnolia, Ark. He was a proud Marine officer who served during WW II. He lived and raised a family in Smackover while working for Phillips Petroleum Company. After many years in Smackover, he was transferred to London, England, then Bartlesville, Okla., and retired in 1985 after two years in Guangzhou, China. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fayetteville where he served in many different positions. He was preceded in death by his parents; Jay Warren Herring, his wife of 66 years; and daughter, Brady Herring Green. He is survived by his sister, Emma Kidd of Hurst, Texas; daughters, Jay Herring Jr. of Fayetteville, Rebecca Garner of West Fork, and Mell Stephens and husband, Robert, of Jonesboro; and son, Alex Herring and his wife, Linda, of The Woodlands, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was a gentleman and a gentle man who loved and cherished his family and his church and in turn was cherished by them. He was an athlete who in his later years played tennis in the Senior Olympics. In his last few years, he enjoyed the Fayetteville Senior Center and had many friends there. A memorial service will be held at the 1225 East Zion Road chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fayetteville Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at 2 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson Berna.
